The latest Amnesty International Report: “The State of the World’s Human Rights” presents the CEE and SEE governments used the pandemic to tighten controls over justice systems, curtail freedoms, and further discriminate the marginalized communities, increase state control over the judiciary and media, etc. While in some countries, the governments failed to implement adequate measures to protect journalists, whistle-blowers, and health workers, targeting those who criticized government responses to COVID-19, there are also cases in which the authorities “misused existing and new legislation to curtail freedom of expression”, and the judicial harassment of journalists, politicians, activists, and social media users.
