Economist Intelligence Unit presents its 13th edition of the Democracy Index, providing a snapshot of democracy in 165 independent states and two territories. The report’s main focus is the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on democracy and freedom across the world. It reveals that besides Albania that improved its democratic status, the rest of the Western Balkans countries encountered backsliding. The Western Balkans countries that were assessed belong to flawed democracies (Serbia and Albania) or hybrid regimes (North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina). Out of 167 countries, Serbia is ranked 66th, Albania 71st, North Macedonia 78th, Montenegro 81st, while Bosnia and Herzegovina is 101st. Read more here.
