EU Human Rights Groups Call for COVID-19 App Transparency

As part of a coordinated campaign, 9 European members of the Civil Liberties Union for Europe filed a freedom of information requests to national authorities to ensure that governments are abiding by EU data protection legislation. CSOs from Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden, expressed their opinion that they would like to be ensured that governments are not processing more personal data than what is necessary for the bloc’s contact tracing efforts, as well as that member states are also minimizing the risk of data leakage and privacy violations. The organizations indicated that human rights organizations need to make sure that European governments take their responsibility to prepare impact assessments seriously, and no European government uses the pandemic as a pretext for normalizing the expanded use of invasive digital surveillance technologies.
