CIVICUS Monitor has published its report that looks at regional improvements in civic space. Overall, the report found that there have been no significant improvements in civic space in Europe and Central Asia. While regimes in Central Asia have continued to repress civic space since the last report, there has been a decline in civic freedoms in Europe. In particular, threats to the freedom of expression and the targeting of women and LGBTQI+ groups are the key trends noted in Europe. Also, civic space restrictions most frequently documented were the detention of protesters, censorship, intimidation, attacks on journalists, and harassment. The report explicitly mentions Austria as a positive development and Poland as a country of concern. Read more here.
