In its latest publication, the European Civic Forum with four main asks reacted to the European Commission Stakeholders’ Consultation on the Rule of Law in the European Union. It states that the European Commission should adopt a comprehensive approach for the rule of law, fundamental rights, and democracy. Also, a comprehensive approach should include a specific strategy for civil society explaining the tools and instruments at the disposal of the EU institutions, particularly the Commission, ‘to address the restrictions to civic space as identified in the monitoring’. Moreover, the Commission should dedicate a specific chapter and clear benchmarks on an enabling civic space. Finally, civil society should be included structurally in all phases of the monitoring and evaluation and the development of country-specific recommendations. Read more here.
