The 22 April marked Earth Day, devoted to protesting and advocating for the protection of Earth. CSOs worldwide should be accountable to the people they work, as well as to the Earth, and the environment. There are five ways in which CSOs can be accountable to the environment. First, an Environmental policy is a basis for any organization that strives to improve and act upon its commitment to sustainability. Establishing targets can help reach realistic goals that will bring organization closer to fulfilling sustainability commitments. Measuring is key to understanding where change can be made. Mechanisms need to be put in place to ensure organizations can measure their sustainability practices. Any environmental policies, targets, and activities must be present throughout strategic discussions, from fundraising to project development.
