In April 2021, the Montenegrin Government appointed new Commission members for Monitoring Violence against Media, which comprises journalists, media and NGO representatives, the Interior Ministry, Police, State Prosecution, and the National Security Agency. The Commission’s new head has called the authorities to demonstrate the political will to clarify the attacks on journalists and media, emphasizing that the police and prosecution investigations should detect the organizers and leaders behind the attacks. The violence against journalists and media was also addressed in the 2020 European Commission progress report and the US State Department’s latest human rights report, warning that unsolved attacks against journalists remained a critical problem in Montenegro.
