A worrying trend of endangering the right to assembly and excessive use of force by the coercive apparatus has been observed in the past few weeks in Serbia. In mid-November, civil society concerns focused on the ban on rallies in protest of the arrest of civil activists who expressed their revolt against Ratko Mladic’s mural – a wartime criminal, depicted on the public surface. In recent days, however, there have been growing concerns about police actions during most of the simultaneous protests in Belgrade, Novi Sad, and Sabac as dissatisfaction with the new land expropriation law and the inevitable environmental crisis that will be caused by its further use.
