The UN Human Rights Council has adopted by consensus a resolution on equal participation in political and public affairs. The resolution puts an important focus on elections and on the impact of COVID-19 on participation. It underscores the importance of protecting civil society participation at every level as part of effective response to the pandemic, in post-pandemic recovery and as a vital component of democratic electoral processes. In the resolution, the Council requests the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to organize a one-day intersessional workshop to discuss challenges, good practices and experiences in implementing the right to participate in public affairs, notably in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
